To celebrate New Year's Day 2002 I drove the hour North of Kansas City to the Squaw Creek Wildlife Refuge. Mostly this was because their bird count for December 27th, 2001 included a record 476 Bald Eagles.
I deliberately left later than usual to get there well after dawn (I arrived
about 9 am). Partly I wanted better light, mostly it was not a warm
day:
They seemed to be down to about 100 or so Eagles, most of them well out on the
ice where the last few pockets of open water (and the geese to weak to fly away)
were.
