Powell Gardens, a private botanical garden located about 30 miles east of Kansas City has been holding a Butterfly Festival every August for the past few years. These shots are from my trip out to the 2002 event.
Due to a busy schedule we didn't make it out until the newly added second weekend of the festival. Even so, the gardens were still rather crowded. The crowd was a friendly one though, and everyone seemed to be having a good time.
Having just picked up a nifty macro lens I was able to get great closeups of not only the butterflies but also of some of the flowers. The new lens will go to "1 to 1" which means that things are actually life sized on the negative.
In other words, it lets you take very nice pictures of very small things.
