Tempering set up
To temper the clip we need to bake it at 572 - 600 degrees F for 30 minutes. Because I have an ever-indulgent wife I now have a small kiln (a Skutt Firebox 8) that makes this easy.
To keep the clip from burning black we want to coat it in Boric Acid (got it at an old-fashioned drug store) dissovled in denatured alcohol (paint aisle of the hardware store). I put in more boric acid than needed and added the alcohol. I shake the heck out of it and keep as much dissolved as will go into solution.
The tongs are for fishing it out of the boric acid and (later) the kiln. The wire rack is for cooling, and the pyrometer came with the kiln.
